Each tube is precisely fit to each crook before it is assembled. The main tuning slide copper cross brace is a Thane signature design. Not only does it add a nice aesthetic but copper transfers sound vibration extremely well so it allows the tuning slide to vibrate with the rest of the instrument as it is being played. This helps relieve more tension and allows for an even easier playing horn. The slides are fit tightly and hand lapped for ideal movement. Amado waterkeys are standard on the main tuning slide and available on the third slide as well for easy draining. A third slide stop screw prevents unwanted damage. A great all around option for any and all styles of playing. This has the correct taper, ventura opening, mouthpiece gap, and ideal length for the best playing Bb trumpet. Each leadpipe is drawn to a mandrel for consistency, trimmed, and fit for the receiver and tuning slide. There are four main options that allow for a variety of tonal colors. Depending on your style, what you are looking for, or what you are wanting in the final product sound there will be a bell option for you! The Alder and Birch models offer a very “in the box” classic trumpet sound. Still creating more balanced overtones and general core than a mass produced trumpet yet still easily blendable within any section. If you are looking for something outside the box and wanting to express yourself through a more and wider tonal pallet than the Sequoia and Willow models might be for you. They offer a wider taper bell with slightly larger bell. Coupled with either the Redbrass or Goldbrass material these bells offer an even broader, warmer, and more projecting sound that is second to none. Since picking up a Thane trumpet, I don’t feel that way anymore — this horn seems to read my mind and work with me like a true teammate, an extension of my own body and imagination. The sound that's in my head seems to just happen! Transitioning through tone colors is smooth and immediate, and the possibilities are wide -- from very dark to sparkly and brilliant. The horn can play at a whisper volume with incredible stability, and push to extreme louds without cracking. The core is solid with wide dispersion and easy projection. Articulation is crisp and responsive, pitches are superbly even, slots are easy to target, valves are quick, fluid and feel “solid". The design and craftsmanship is at the highest level. A Spokane native, Hall first picked up the trumpet in fifth grade, captivated by the sounds of Lee Morgan and Miles Davis—a spark that continues to shape his voice today. A past winner of the National Trumpet Competition – Jazz Division (2013), Hall has been described by Earshot Jazz as “a fiercely expressive soloist, equally grounded in tradition and innovation.” He has performed and recorded with a wide range of jazz and commercial legends, including Maria Schneider, Paquito D’Rivera, Terence Blanchard, Arturo Sandoval, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Peter Erskine, George Benson, Johnny Mathis, Gloria Estefan, Wycliffe Gordon, Vincent Herring, Troy Roberts, and many others. Known for his expressive tone and dynamic improvisation, Hall has performed on prominent stages and festivals including Carnegie Hall, Benaroya Hall, The Triple Door, the Bellevue Jazz Festival, Gene Harris Jazz Festival, and Leavenworth Jazz Festival. He has also been a featured soloist with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, Symphony Tacoma, South Florida Jazz Orchestra, and Spokane Jazz Orchestra. Hall’s latest album, Hometown (Origin Records 2026), follows Influences (2024), Seen on the Scene (2021) and his debut, Hallways (2017). His music has been praised by All About Jazz, Jazz Weekly, and JazzTimes, which described his work as “fiery and fluid... steeped in tradition but pushing forward.” His discography also includes Home at Last (2024), Inventions (2021), and Cheap Thrills: The Music of Rick Margitza (2020), North By Freaking Northwest (2019), and Jazz & The Philharmonic (2014), among others. They are used because they are small, lightweight, only one small solder point, and work well when properly cared for. Caring for your water key Keep them clean! They are small and have tiny internal parts that will stop working if they get dirty. Flush water through them to clear out any blockage and add one drop of valve oil to clear up and prevent freezing up. If you notice no water is coming out, or very little, that means it is dirty and there is something in the way. Take the slide out of the trumpet and plug up one hole with your finger, run the sink water through the open hole and open the water key. This will flush out any dirt and clear up the issue. *VIDEO TO COME* If the key is frozen stuck. That means it was dirty and dried out. Put some oil on the piston and in the hole. Push the piston in and out or turn it if it can move. Hopefully it frees up enough to move back and forth. Once it is unstuck goto the sink and flush it out with soapy water. Then rinse with water forcing the water out the water key hole, then reapply some oil to the piston and work it back in. To avoid this in the future keep some oil on the piston part. *VIDEO TO COME* Ideally when these get frozen stuck they need to be taken apart and cleaned from the inside. The spring gets dirty and the inside on the piston and barrel need to be cleaned and brushed out. They are well designed and built and are easier to maintain than the Amado keys. They have a slightly larger hole opening for easier water draining. Easy to disassemble with a standard hex key for full internal cleaning. The small ball bearing inside sits tightly up against the opening so there is no air leakage and helps maintain good compression. These are a great new option and are available on all new Thane Trumpets.
